Stipend

Teachers selected as NEH Summer Scholars will receive a stipend of $1,200.

  • Stipends are intended to help cover travel expenses to and from the project location, books, and ordinary living expenses.
  • Stipends are taxable.
  • Stipends are paid at the end of the workshop.

NEH Summer Scholars are required to attend all scheduled meetings and to engage fully as professionals in all project activities. Participants who do not complete the full tenure of the project will receive a reduced stipend.

Bus and Metro travel to the landmarks and admission fees to the sites will be provided as part of the workshop.

All participants will receive a copy of Robert Bonner’s The Soldiers Pen: Firsthand Impressions of the American Civil War (Hill and Wang, 2007).

Participants who stay at the Holiday Inn Express at Ballston will receive a free breakfast each day and free Wi-Fi Internet access.

Near both the hotel and GMU’s Arlington campus, where the workshop will be held, there are multiple reasonably priced dining options to accommodate different dietary needs for both lunch and dinner.
